Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm, Week of Apr 12, 2015

More greens each week, though the quantities are still small. So be quick and get the greens you want. Seedlings are started for lots of lettuces, chard, peppers, tomatoes, onions, cabbages, and more.

Where to get credible nutritional information? I came across this essay and quote it below. It’s a blog post from Jan 30, 2015, by Tina Paxton, (“I live on .6 acres in a ‘sub-rural’ coastal community, NC. I have a BA in Human Relations and an MA in Nutrition but currently earn a paycheck doing research and adding info to a database.”)

I’ve spent a lot of time looking at what the WAPF teaches/preaches as well as what Paleo/Primal teaches. There are many similarities (bone broth, the love of butter…) and there are a few disagreements (grains). It is one of those situations where I wish they would focus on their agreements and not separate on their disagreements.

Both camps have their dogmatism but I think WAPF is more entrenched and less flexible on their dogma (Fermented Cod Liver Oil and High Vitamin Butter Oil being their most dogmatic doctrines) than the Paleo/Primal folks are. I prefer the flexibility of Paleo/Primal perhaps for no better reason that I tried the FCLO and HVBO and as God is my witness they both made me ill! I’ll get my vitamin A and D in other forms, thanks!

Where they all agree:

1. Processed foods are killing us.
2. Animal fat and coconut oil are good for us.
3. vegetable oils are bad.
4. Soy – bad.
5. GMOs – bad
6. EAT REAL FOOD
7. Eat fermented food.
8. BONE BROTH ROCKS — drink lots of it!
9. Animal protein (pastured) is good for us (some disagreement in how much).

Healthy Eating,
Ian and Cami

Fisher's Produce:  Harvest Update

We had a good asparagus harvest today, despite having to pick in the rain, and a farmer shouldn’t compain about the rain, so it was a good day.

Other items of interest around the farm: Hudson and I ate the first ripe strawberry of the season yesterday (and Chantee followed it up a few seconds later with the second). It won’t be long until there are more!

We have room for several more CSA members this season. If you or any of your friends are interested, let us know. We can work out a pro-rated membership fee (280.00) as we have already passed the first delivery.

This week’s CSA selection will likely include:

Fall harvested sweet potatoes (very excellent)
and your choice of:
Asparagus and Spinach (two bunches/bags total)
Collards, Kale, or Bok Choi
Baby lettuce mix or butterhead lettuce
Salad Turnips or Easter Egg Radishes
Green Onions or Basil

See you on Thursday!

Luke

WE ARE OPEN YEAR ROUND

Have you been thinking about getting involved with the local food movement, beyond financial support of our Market? Our Market serves St. Petersburg all year long—all summer long—every other week. There is no break in service because our Growers grow year round, unlike large local farms. We have reached a point where additional volunteers are needed to help on Wednesdays through Fridays during weeks that the Market is open. This time spent together is a win-win for everyone involved. Please consider volunteering several hours (2 to 3) every other week to serve the St. Petersburg Community as you help package goods, deliver produce, or assist with administrative tasks. Your time will help keep this small, woman-owned business sustainable! We train our volunteers to be successful working together as a team and we realize there are some who prefer to work alone. We accommodate as best we can. Wonderful friendships are forming! Our volunteers are having the time of their lives working with others who have similar interests. We are now training volunteers for Thursday and Friday morning teams. Please contact Tina at 727-515-9469 to reserve a spot for you or call just to chat if you have questions. You are needed. Please answer the call!

SPLG’s fruit basket
Chiquita bananas, Medjool dates, luscious local papayas, Tango Mandarins, Washington State fancy fuji apples, juicy Florida peaches, luscious d’anjou pears and more succulent loquats. Tis the season for all things cobbler, n’est-ce pas?

Organically Inclined is back!
Donna has posted many customer favorites like dried banana chips, dried mangos, red quinoa, chia seeds, raw whole cashews and lots more.

New to our Market

  • We are excited to be selling bananas for the first time ever and we’ve got over 30 pounds to sell out. This is an experiment of sorts for us. We get them on Monday so we will be storing them carefully until Friday’s deliveries. If you want to freeze bananas for smoothies, we’ve got just the ticket. I always peel mine first.
  • Stevia is a well kept secret for satisfying a sweet tooth AND it’s healthy! Locally grown by Customer Kathleen, our resident food fermentation expert and long distance runner. Stevia is a natural sweetener with a zero glycemic index and no calories
  • Would you believe we have herb-filled window boxes available? Debra Black of Mrs. Chippy’s Plant World is really moving forward to expand our Market’s new DIRECT ORDER SERVICE which makes it possible for you to order larger plants in bigger pots. Debra’s variety has exploded this week!

On sale this week
All coffee, salmon (rock bottom to get it gone!), extra virgin olive oil, Wisconsin jack cheese, d’anjou pears, shallots, and jumbo white onions.

When you buy too much
My mom always said “Your eyes were bigger than your belly!” whenever I left food on my plate. Along those lines, I do tend to overbuy produce with the best of intentions but I don’t eat as much as I used to. I look for ways to save week-old produce (that is still fresher than the local store) AND still keep up with an active lifestyle. Last week I finally selected THE RHUBARB COBBLER recipe I intended to brag about making. Luckily the rhubarb still looked and felt just as fresh as when it arrived. SAVED?? Well… I haven’t actually made the cobbler yet but I DID make the filling and refrigerated it in mason jars to finish later in the week. Who knows? Maybe it will ferment a bit and add some pizzazz to the final result. The most pleasant surprise was discovering an easy way to prepare fruit fillings quickly and save for any occasion, like an ice cream topping! Hmmm.

What customers say about SPLG

  • We very much appreciate your service!!
  • I am just so happy that St Pete Locally Grown is in existence . Having moved here from Up State NY I had pretty much given up on quality produce but then I discovered You!  The taste and freshness is reminiscent of picking straight from the garden pre GMO days! Thank you for the great customer service!
  • I am completely satisfied with the customer service. You guys are on top of it.
  • Everything was great and we look forward to signing on long term! Much easier than driving down to the market every Saturday!
  • Everything was wonderful and I am very pleased. I haven’t had fresh raw cows’ milk since I was a very little girl and I didn’t even know what a papaya looked like before it was cut up and served on my plate! Thank you so much for doing what you do and also thank you for helping me work out the details of the pickup.
  • Everything was wonderful. Delicious, fresh, could not ask for better. Thank you.
  • We’re both very happy with your products and your service, no complaints at all. And I’m already thinking about what to order this week… We’re with you for the long haul, I promise!

WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST CUSTOMERS
Once you have submitted your order, if in doubt about what you owe, you can always confirm what you have been charged for by checking your account history and viewing your most current invoice. Instructions on how to do that are on our Q&A page under the question entitled Since you don’t provide an invoice with delivery, how do I know what I owe? Also, since your vegetables are picked fresh within 24 hours of delivery, they should be lasting for WEEKS in your refrigerator. When you accept delivery, please take a few minutes to inspect your order to protect your vegetables from unnecessary spoilage. Lastly, it is imperative that you understand our policy on Unclaimed Orders found on our Q&A page. When you make a purchase you are agreeing to abide by this policy.

SATISFACTION GUARANTEED
Our Market has high standards for what it sells. Despite that—as seasons transition—the challenges of evolving weather and pesky insects can take its toll on the crops. Market Growers are being very selective about what they are willing to present to you. No, it won’t always be picture perfect (which is part of its charm) and sometimes an insect is going to evade capture! But we won’t send you anything that we wouldn’t eat ourselves. If for any reason we have goofed and you are dissatisfied, please report it to me right away so we can rectify the situation. That’s how we get better and we all benefit from that. Your satisfaction is key to our success as a resource for St. Petersburgs’ lovers of chemical-free, organically & locally grown vegetables.
