MISC MARKET NOTES

S

Happy October! We hope this finds you enjoying the splendor of this most glorious month. It seems like every corner of the south is throwing a party to celebrate the end of the hot summer and the welcoming of football, hunting and pumpkin/sweet potato pie season. As a sustainable CLEAN FOOD market we want to encourage you to take full advantage of the best this time of year has to offer – meaning healthier choices for your favorite foods.

Lets ditch the store bought seasonings. Often they include MSG, fillers and too much sodium. Here are three you can make at home, store in an airtight or recycled container and enjoy year round. These were chosen because there are so MANY recipes that each can be used to prepare.

Onion Soup Mix Ranch Dressing Mix Pumpkin Pie Spice
1/2 c dry onion flakes 1 Tbs dried chives 3 Tbs Cinnamon
3 Tbs Ground beef boullion 1 ½ tsp garlic powder 2 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp onion powder 1 ½ tsp onion powder 1 ½ tsp nutmeg
1 Tbs parsley flakes 1 tsp dry dill weed 1 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp garlic 1/4 tsp salt 1 tsp allspice
1/2 tsp paprika 1/4 tsp black pepper 1 pinch black pepper
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
Retro picnic

Another thing we’ve noticed trending of late are small potent sweet treats popular in other cultures.

Retro picnic
Colosseum Dates are sweet/savory Italian treat and have been around a long, LONG time.

Retro picnic
Turkish Kayisi Atomu aka Apricot Bliss is just that – a sweet blissful heavenly bite, and a natural way to satisfy a sweet tooth.

Horton’s Farm: It’s been another disastrously blessed two weeks on the farm. Several weeks ago we MADE the yard look like Helene hit us by cutting down four pine trees “just in case”. Cleanup is ongoing and is providing a lot of material for landscaping (pine bark and pine straw), bio char (stuff being burned) and permaculture (soft rotting material being used in beds). It’s a lot more work doing it this way but oh so satisfying as nature itself is providing what it needs to flourish.

The other disaster in disguise was having a freezer go out. Thankfully we caught it in time to save the bulk of food but there was still about 10 gallons of fruit and vegetables that had to be discarded . . . to the chickens and to garden beds for compost.

We look forward to seeing you next Friday at one of our pickup locations. Thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Market is open Fridays at 9 p.m. through 9 p.m. Mondays!

Thank you for choosing Northeast Georgia Locally Grown as a way to support your local producers. This online farmers market allows you to buy directly from multiple farms committed to chemical-free and local produce all year long! CHEMICAL-FREE means produce and pastures grown without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides. LOCAL means within 80 miles from the market pickup locations (usually much much closer). Do you know someone who grows chemical-free food in the area? Get them in touch with us. Know someone who wants fresh food? Spread the word. Put the two together, and that’s growing organically!

PICKUP TIME is Wednesday from 5-6:30 p.m. in Clayton, Clarkesville, or Gainesville.

If you do not get an email ORDER CONFIRMATION after you finish the checkout process, then your order is NOT complete. Head back to the market page, and your order might still be there waiting for you to check out! If you have any trouble or questions at all, we are here to help; simply reply to this email.

Once you place an order, be on the lookout for the order reminder email on Wednesday with further pickup and payment notes.

Thanks for supporting local farmers!

Grumpy Goat:  Weblog Entry

Head out to the store today for the last Friday pick up of the year. We still have tomatoes, peppers, squashes and pie pumpkins, and herbs and will have our typical assortment of fresh baked bagels out!

We will still have the store open on Tuesdays while vegetables remain… probably just 2-3 weeks or so. Bread, jam, soap, flour, wheat berries, and any remaining honey will be available for preordering throughout the winter. And you are more than welcome to swing in for eggs as normal.

Speaking of eggs, we know they are laying slowly right now. For those that don’t know, chicken egg laying is directly correlated to day lengths so these shorter days have slowed them down. We will probably be moving the chickens up to the barn (their winter spot) soon at which time we will extend their days with a well timed morning light which will hopefully get them laying again. For now though we’ll let them enjoy a few more days of a well deserved break.

If anyone is out and about next weekend you can visit Matt on Sunday the 20th at Walk with Nature in Saint Marys. Or you can come see me the 19th-20th at the Autumn Fiber Fest and get your Wool fix! We’ll also be at the last Sidney Farmers Market for the year tomorrow during their Boos and Brews Festival! And if we don’t see you , thanks for another great year! We couldn’t do it without you!
