Market News

So Mother’s Day is already coming up next weekend, and if it’s flowers and plants you’re looking for, I think we’ve got you covered. There are flower bouquets, hanging baskets of annual flowers, container plants ready to go into the ground or your pots, and more are available from of growers this week. There are several plant sales going on around town this week too, and I have details for two of them.

The Williams Farm Plant Sale is happening this Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 2pm. Besides the available perennial & annual flowers, medicinal & edible herbs, and veggie seedlings, they’ll have tea and refreshments available. They also would like to meet your mom, so bring her with you! (Or, if you’re a mom, let your kids know that this is something you’d like to do.) Williams Farm is one of the newer urban farm projects of the Athens Land Trust, and is located across from 240 Northside Drive, between North Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive. I’ve not been out to see the place yet, and this plant sale is an excellent opportunity to go visit some farmland being preserved in town.

Another nice project going on in town is Good Roots. They’re a non-profit in town, and they have lots of vegetable, herb, and flower seedlings for sale at their office at 145 Barrington Drive on the Eastside of Athens off Cedar Shoals and behind the Perry’s convenience store. Multiple Choices: Center for Independent Living is their parent organization. Their seedlings are Certified Naturally Grown, and are sown by a small group of differently-abled adults in Jackson County. The proceeds from sales are returned to the sowers based upon what has sold. Baker Creek Seeds (one of my favorite heirloom seed companies) has donated a large supply of seeds and they have quite the variety of tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, herbs, along with some unusual crops such as globe artichokes and luffas. So, if you don’t find the veggie seedlings you’re looking for listed at ALG, or you just want to browse another source, take a look to see what they’ve got available over at their office. I didn’t even know this group existed until they told me about their plant sale, and it sounds like a really worthwhile project.

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market from the Athens Land Trust is open Saturday mornings and their farm stand is open Tuesday afternoons. They have a website too. The Comer Farmers Market is open in downtown Comer on Saturday mornings. The Oconee County farmers market is open Saturday mornings in front of the Oconee County Courthouse in Watkinsville. The Shields Ethridge Cultivator Market is held monthly in Jefferson. If you know of any markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Martin's Farmstand:  Monday, May 4

It is spring time! It is time to plant, plant, plant. I love to see the sprouting seeds and to hear the birds when I go out in the morning. The asparagus is up now. With this nice warm weather I expect to cut the first asparagus sometime late this week. We plan to open the stand for the season on Saturday, May 9. Hours will be the same as they have been in the past, 10am- 6pm, Mon- Sat. I have lots of beatiful spinach and green garlic ready now from outside and lovely mild greenhouse arugula.

We are always looking for ways to make your experience with us easier and more efficient. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to receive regular updates about our produce and life on the farm! Andrew has joined our crew fulltime. He will be doing most of the social media posts. I plan to still write the weblog as I have been and that will also be on facebook etc. Daniel

Heirloom Living Market Lilburn:  Strawberries and other news...

This is a rather ‘chatty’ Newsletter; however, I hope you will take the time to read it!

We have Strawberries!!

Peaches coming soon!

Last year, we didn’t have many Strawberries available! This year, we are truly blessed to have those plump, juicy, sweet fruits available from:

Back River Farm
Burnell Farms
Watsonia Farms

Organic Strawberries are available in quarts from Burnell Farms and quarts and/or gallons from Back River Farm (Farmers’ Sales Table this week and on Market starting next week) and Watsonia Farms!

Remember, these are ORGANIC Strawberries. They have not been sprayed with pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. They may not be ‘perfectly shaped’ but they will be fresh and flavorful! Pay attention now — this is important. Here is a hint – when you get your berries home, soak them in a solution of Vinegar and Water 1 part Vinegar to 3 parts Water (preferably filtered water or spring water). I use Apple Cider Vinegar (Bragg’s) however, white vinegar will work also. Soak those little red juicy globes of strawberry goodness for about a half hour; swish the water around when you think about it. The soak will remove any spores that may be present on the berries and will prolong the life of them greatly. After the soak, rinse well. I spin my berries dry (salad spinner) and then put in a glass container lined with a paper towel. I do not put the lid on tightly so that moisture does not accumulate and there is air flow! My berries keep til I finish the last one ~ sometimes up to 5 days later! Try it, it really does work! (Thanks Mom!)

My plan is to purchase some every week while they are available and become a ‘Dehydrating Fool’! I will also freeze some to ensure enjoyment of this wonderful fruit during the winter season…which is a perfect segue into..

Eating Local, Seasonal and Preserving the Harvest

I believe that we choose to use the Market venue because we want to 1)know where our food comes from (KNOW YOUR FARMER) 2)support local Farmers 3)have the ability to purchase nutritious food without chemicals, GMO’s, sprays, poisons 4)have access to great foods and a great community of like-minded folks!

The Standard American Diet is all about convenience and laden with really BAD stuff! I choose to eat LOCAL and SEASONAL! It is a CHOICE and I am happy that I have that choice! But I want to have Strawberries and Fruit, Cauliflower and Green Beans, Corn (GMO free of course) and other Veggies all year round. THAT is the reason, I am also a big believer in Preserving the Harvest! Freezing, Canning, Dehydrating are the answer to that challenge!

Do you need help or ideas on how to ‘Preserve the Harvest’? Just ask! I will be sharing my journey of freezing, canning and dehydrating with you through this Spring Summer and Fall. Want to share the journey? Let me know!

Market Closes at 8:00pm Monday!

Thank you to those who have already placed orders!

Oh dear! I neglected to let you all know last week that b>Marie Wheeler of Bakery on Brooks would be gone this week! I apologize profusely! She is enjoying a week with the ‘grands’ and will return to us NEXT week! By then, those of us with an addiction to her goodies will be in need of a fix! Be sure and get your order in before close of Market!

I ordered her Buffalo Bleu Cheese Dip last week! It does clearly state: “not for the faint of heart!”! Oh WOW – that is a brilliant description! Very delicious, but HOT. Dabrielle just laughed and laughed at me when I called to tell her my mouth was on fire! “Maryanne, it says right in the description…” Well, yes, it DOES! Now … see what happens when you don’t READ things that you should! (hint – read the newsletter!)

Kathy Barnes is the Coordinator of the Lilburn Market as well as the owner of So-Koi. Kathy is an excellent seamstress and has Retro Aprons, Lanyards, Pillowcases, Checkbook Covers, Tissue Holders on the Market. She is passionate about living naturally and makes every effort to live ‘green’! Although always concerned about the use of plastic in our lives, further research lead Kathy to the decision that she wants to eliminate it as much as possible! To assist in this goal, she has created muslin Veggie Storage Bags and is now offering them at Market! Check them out on the Market and on the Farmers’ Sales Table this week at each Market! For more information about plastic and it’s horrible, destructive and toxic effects in our world and the ecosystem, click the link. This documentary is available on Netflix!

Plastic Paradise

Kathy is also offering Turmeric and Cinnamon on the Market. Both are wonderful spice with medicinal components and qualities. (and the glass jars she offers these products in are just adorable!) Kathy will also be offering Coconut Sugar in the very near future. This sweetener is an excellent alternative. It’s low glycemic index and full, rich flavor make it my favorite sugar, both for baking and adding a touch to my coffee. Look for this option soon under seasonings.

…this and that…

Thank you all for your support of the Market! Although I drive quite a way on Thursday and so enjoy my time at Markets, I truly could NOT run the Markets without Kathy Barnes, Coordinator of Lilburn Market and Sarah Rockey, Coordinator of The Hamilton Mill Market! These dedicated, selfless, generous ladies give up much more than the mere 2 hours you see them at Market! Their Thursdays are dedicated to Market prep, pickup, sorting, delivery, setup before Market pickup even begins! In addition, they do the initial bookkeeping for their Market and get that information to me; coordinate information with me and put up with my phone calls to clarify information or get input from them. I ask you, the Members to express your gratitude to both Kathy and Sarah! Without them, you would not have a Market! Thank you Sarah and Kathy for ALL you do and for believing in our mission!

Someone mentioned to me last week that I hadn’t written a Black Lab Update in a very long time…After our sudden move up to the North Georgia Mountains he found great escape hole in the backyard fence; and dug some pretty impressive ones also. My fear that he would be hit and killed or hurt AND my angst at his ability to escape motivated the installation of the underground fence. Since putting it in, there have been no escapades into the surrounding area and I have peace of mind. His love of being outside knows no limits and he basks in the sun daily. Besides loving the sunshine, he also enjoys being out in the rain – much to my dismay! He won’t go near a lake, river or stream, but loves the rain! He turned 10 in March, is healthy and happy and still full of life and his antics make me laugh out loud! Recently he enjoyed a visit from Dabrielle’s 4 pound Yorkie (Moochie) and 4 pound Chichuaha (Minnie/Dixie). He was quite the host, although Minnie let him know that she would be ‘the boss of him’ while she was here. Watching her chase him through the backyard brought many a laugh-out-loud-moments…

Thank you for taking the time to read this bit of information!

Please know that we appreciate the support of Crossfit O-Zone Gym, All Saints Lutheran Church and Hamilton Mill Home Owners Association for the use of the great spaces for Market. We are grateful for you and for your support of our dedicated, LOCAL Farmers/Growers and Artisans.

McColloms Market:  Parsnips in May!

Hi All:

If you hadn’t already noticed, Denise Griffin (Sanctuary Gardens) is offering parsnips this month. They won’t be around for the June order so get them while you can!

Also, I wanted to remind you that the order closes tomorrow evening.

Thanks so much.

Farm Where Life is Good:  A Spring Spinach Bonanza!

spinach! Spinach! SPINACH!

WLIG Spinach has braved the winter and is shining in the spring!

Hello everyone. The rain is coming down to soak the parched spring fields as I type. Such a wonderful sound on the rooftop. The fields are waking up and getting back into order with cover crops. The high tunnel is prepped for tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant and peppers— many trials underway. The fence test (on a small scale) is protecting our bounty of winter spinach from eager, hungry deer in the previous/overwintered high tunnel location. It is truly restful to know it is all safe!

Here is your chance to get your “green” fix after a long winter hiatus. This loose-leaf spinach was started in September of last year, fed us a bit thru the winter, and now is growing like gangbusters— a successful over-wintered trial.

It stores incredibly well in the fridge (upwards of 3wks or more); it makes your green smoothies invigorating; it satisfies well in the fresh spinach salad (or try a warm/wilted spinach salad for dinner!); it holds up perfectly in the cooking applications from soup to creamed spinach to garlic braising; and it is perfect for the frozen package(s) needed in that mainstay of midwestern dipping this summer— Spinach Dip.

Whew! I’m hungry now. You too? How about a pound or three?

For a hearty salad, breakfast, or side dish, consider cooking up some wheat berries too. They store well, fill you up, give you something great to chew, and, I’m thinking, lower your cholesterol too with all their fiber. A pound of these golden beauties too, you say?

Head to The Market and find the SPINACH and WHEAT BERRIES for sale there. We are happy to take email orders and cash-on-delivery if you prefer that mode.

Delivery will be DIFFERENT than previous years— TUESDAY DELIVERY. We will send out a Monday reminder for pick up!

(PLEASE NOTE: Dropsite locations have changed/been reduced. We are happy to consider additional special sites if the volume of a delivery is over $40. Please send us an email to inquire.)

Have a wonderful week.

Roger and Lara

Recipes

One Pot Indian Lentil Stew with Greens
by Melissa Clark
An easy weeknight dinner using any combo of the good greens we are offering this week!

1 cup brown or green lentils
2 leeks, white and light green parts only,
2 ¼ teaspoons salt, more as needed
¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
2 garlic cloves, minced
¾ cup long-grain rice
1 ½ teaspoons ground cumin
½ teaspoon ground allspice
¼ teaspoon cayenne
1 bay leaf
1 cinnamon stick
4 cups trimmed and chopped spring greens (chard leaves, spinach, kale, mustard or a combination)
PREPARATION
Place lentils in a large bowl and add warm tap water to cover by 1 inch. Let soak.
Meanwhile, halve leeks lengthwise; run under warm water to release any grit. Thinly slice leeks crosswise.
Heat oil in a Dutch oven or large pot over medium-high heat. Add leeks and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and crispy, 5 to 10 minutes. Transfer half the leeks to a bowl to use for garnish and sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt.
Stir garlic into the pot with the remaining leeks and cook for 15 seconds until fragrant. Stir in rice and sauté 2 minutes. Stir in cumin, allspice and cayenne; sauté 30 seconds.
Drain lentils and stir into pot. Add 4 1/4 cups water, 2 teaspoons salt, bay leaf and cinnamon stick. Bring to a simmer. Cover and cook over low heat for 15 minutes. Rinse greens in a colander and spread damp leaves over lentil mixture. Cover and cook 5 minutes more, until rice and lentils are tender and greens are wilted. Remove from heat and let stand, covered, for 5 minutes. Serve sprinkled with reserved crispy leeks.

Market News

Hello!

We’ve got a beautiful week of weather ahead for you. The greens are growing, and the strawberries are ripening! It’s the big push time of year, getting the last of the summer crops in the ground. Or at least until June, when we have to do it all over again!

The strawberries are trickling in. As usual, they start slow and then come in with a vengeance! We are anticipating a good berry year, so we expect to have enough for everyone to get more than their fair share.

Dozen Bakery will be offering a new bread this week – their French Country Loaf!

Also, Little Seed Farm Soaps are back in stock. These are a wonderful goat milk based soap from a small goat farm in Lebanon, TN. They smell divine and use only the highest quality, all natural ingredients.

And this week we have plants for your garden! Lots of basil varieties and tomato plants, all raised using only organic seeds and potting mix. There will be more of the ‘Genovese’ variety of basil next week.

As always, thanks so much for your support, and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday

John and Tallahassee

Thanks, everyone, for supporting locally grown agriculture and for choosing to spend your money right here in Pike County!

See you Wednesday,

Heirloom Living Market Lawrenceville :  Strawberries and other news!

These changes will ensure that we all will be getting their fresh Microgreens very soon. Can’t wait to enjoy their Wraps again! Krista and George will return to us in June!

There will be a few things on the Farmers’ Sales Table, so you may want to pickup early to snag what will be there!

Dabrielle of My Daily Bread provides us with delicious traditional wheat based Organic Baked Goods! From Challah, Sourdough, Ezekiel and other yummy Breads to Sweet Breads, Cookies, Jams and Jellies, Cheese Dips and Pasta Salads, Dabrielle is passionate about quality!
